According to centercinemapress , citing The Hollywood Reporter, the French Academy of Cinema Arts and Techniques, which awards the country’s film awards called Cesar, has withdrawn from X (formerly Twitter)
In a statement released on Monday, the Caesars Academy announced that it had deleted its account on the platform, stressing that the public positions of the media owner, Elon Musk, meant that “X” no longer aligned with the academy’s stated values
The statement said: “The Academy’s mission is to promote cinema in all its diversity. This program supports all forms of artistic expression, without distinction of origin or identity of those involved in the creation or distribution of films. The César Academy believes that Platform X, especially in light of the actions and positions of its leader, is no longer aligned with the Academy’s values and for this reason it will withdraw from the platform with immediate effect
The Cesar Academy left the social network at the same time as the Berlin Film Festival in November, but did not explicitly cite Musk’s politics as the reason for the move. Alberto Barbera, the director of the Venice Film Festival, also resigned from X last year, insisting that the platform’s political transformation under Musk no longer pursued the goals and objectives he believed in and that he did not want to be a part of it
Tech billionaire Musk has used social media to actively support far-right groups in Europe and attack government leaders. On Sunday, Musk campaigned for the far-right Alternative for Germany party, which advocates for the repatriation of ethnic minorities, including German citizens, to their countries of origin
The Caesars Academy announced last week that it would suspend the membership of any academy member currently under investigation for sexual violence
The 50th Cesar Awards will be held in Paris on February 28
