According to CentercinemaPress, citing Variety, French actress Juliette Binoche has been elected as the president of the jury for the 78th Cannes Film Festival

While American Greta Gerwig held this position last year, this is the second time in Cannes’ history that a woman has headed the jury for two consecutive years

Binoche is one of the most well-known French actors and has worked with auteur directors such as Abbas Kiarostami, Krzysztof Kieślowski, Michel Hanke, David Cronenberg, Anthony Minghella, Abel Ferrara, Olivier Assayas, Leos Carax, Claire Denis, Amos Gitai, Naomi Kawase, Hirokazu Koreida, Louis Malle and Hu Hsiao-sin

This international actress has dozens of awards to her name, and she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for the film “The English Patient” in 1997 and the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for Kiarostami’s “Copyright” in 2010

Speaking about her role as president of the Cannes jury, Binoche said she was looking forward to sharing the experience with the jury members and the public. “In 1985, I first walked up the steps of Cannes with the enthusiasm and uncertainty of a young actress. I never imagined that 40 years later I would be returning in the honorary role of president of the jury,” she added

Binoche’s career spans more than 40 years and 70 films. She made her first leading role in André Taquinh’s “The Appointment,” which premiered at Cannes in 1985, and her last appearance at the festival was in 2023 with “The Taste of Things,” directed by Tran Anh Hung, which won the Best Director award

She has also appeared occasionally on television, including “The Stairs” and “New Look,” a series for Apple TV in which she appeared as Coco Chanel

Binoche has recently been elected president of the European Film Academy

The 78th Cannes Film Festival will be held from May 13 to 24
