According to centercinemapress, quoted by World of Reel, Quentin Tarantino took aim at Hollywood, and especially online viewing services, in a surprise interview at the Sundance Film Festival, blaming them for contributing to the death of the filmmaking experience
He said, “What is the meaning of a movie now? Something that symbolically runs in theaters for four weeks and you can only watch it on TV from the second week
He added: “I didn’t get involved in these incidents to lower the result”
The “Popular Story” creator said that movie theaters have gotten worse since his last film, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” was released in 2019. He first took aim at studios’ screening schedules, saying they don’t give movies proper screening times and then stream them after a few weeks in theaters
He said: “Well, now what is the meaning of a movie? Something that is symbolically released in theaters for 4 weeks and you can only watch it on TV from the second week.” I didn’t get into these stories for such a result; I mean, the release situation in 2018 was bad enough, 2019 was bad enough, and that year became the last year of cinema
The most recent clear example of Tarantino’s words can be seen in the film “Villain,” which was still in theaters in late December and selling well in the United States, but Universal decided to release it online a month after its release
This method has now become the new normal for studios, who immediately devalue the film in theaters in order to make significant profits from online screenings
He also told the audience that he is creating an equal space for fatherhood and film directing. He said: I’m in no rush to start producing. I’ve been doing this for 30 years. My son will be 5 next month and I have a 2-and-a-half-year-old daughter. When I’m in America, I write, but otherwise I’m a father
He added: I kind of want to hold off until my son is at least 6 years old. That way he will understand what’s going on and this memory will last him the rest of his life
“If you ask me what I’m doing right now, I’m writing a play and that’s probably the next thing I’ll end up doing, Tarantino said. “If it doesn’t turn out well, I won’t make it into a movie, but if it does, it might be my last movie
