According to centercinemapress  , citing Variety, “The Congregation of Cardinals,” a thriller about the election of a new pope, was named best picture at the 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards, while “Shogun,” an epic look at feudal Japan, and “Only Murders in the Building,” a mystery satire, won television awards in the drama and comedy categories

At the ceremony, which honored Jane Fonda with a lifetime achievement award, “Shogun” topped the television category with four awards for best actor and actress in a drama series, as well as the stuntman award. The series and its cast have also won Golden Globes and Emmys

In the film category, no film won more than one award, and “The Congregation of Cardinals” didn’t come easily, as the early frontrunner for the awards season, Emilia Pérez, was sidelined by controversy. “Anora,” which lost the Best Ensemble Award to “The Congregation of Cardinals,” has already won the Directors Guild of America and Producers Guild of America awards and is a contender for Best Picture at the Oscars, but “The Congregation of Cardinals,” which was a BAFTA winner last week, could be a serious contender at the Oscars

Chalamet beat out Adrien Brody for “The Brutalist” in a tough competition and said in his acceptance speech: “I aspire to greatness, I want to be one of the greats, I’m inspired by the greats; I’m inspired by Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps as much as I am by Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando and Viola Davis

On the other hand, the film “The Material” marked a significant comeback for Demi Moore, who had been away from Hollywood for years

This year’s awards come at a time of political upheaval in America, with Donald Trump, who most members of the Screen Actors Guild oppose, returning to power, and Hollywood studio leaders having become more silent since Trump was sworn in as president. But Jane Fonda, known for a lifetime of acting in films such as “Clouet” and “9 to 5,” used her stage presence to urge artists not to be silent

“These are serious times, so let’s be brave,” Fonda said. “We must not isolate ourselves, we must stay in society and help the vulnerable. We must find ways to protect the inspiring vision of the future

The ceremony, which paid tribute to Los Angeles and its resilience in the face of fire, celebrated the city with a montage of movies and shows set in the city, from “Chinatown” to “Baywatch.” While the city is still the entertainment capital, filming in Los Angeles has declined, and cities like Georgia that offer tax incentives are now more popular
